A day of a kid living in a informal settlement
I wake up to darkness, in a cold, icy mattress it’s freezing, I get my dusty bag not having breakfast and I’m off. I can’t change my clothes I only have one pair, no shoes I’m walking along the dusty road, I stepped on a sharp rock or two on the way to school.
It takes such a long time to get there I can’t even travel by bus because I have no money. In school the bathrooms are horrible, we need to dig a hole to do our business, in my class there’s not a very good education, the teacher has to help each one of us, there’s like 60 in my class it’s very packed. Sometimes the teacher doesn’t even get to me because there’s so many people.
On the way from school it’s the same thing stepping on stones, hurting my cold feet. I need to do my homework late at night because the street lights only come on late, so I have time to play. There’s not a lot of space so I play in a little junk pile by myself. I get a few cuts I don’t have bandages to stop it from getting infected sadly. Then it’s time to get inside and have dinner. We normally have chicken we need to kill them ourselves, the chickens are in my house it’s very noisy. My house is made up of cardboard and tin it’s not stable at all...
I sleep in a cold mattress with my brother, my mom and dad share a bed. To keep myself entertained I play with rocks after dinner. I don’t have any fancy electronics like iPhones and iPads. I play a game I made up called “Rock Style”. When it’s time for bed, I can’t brush my teeth because I don’t have a toothbrush or toothpaste I can’t afford it. I then lay in bed and play with my teddy, it’s not a stuffed animal though, it’s a rock. I normally play with the rock after I’ve done my homework, it’s very dark now we don’t have any lights in our house. Then I go to bed and get ready to start another day in my life.
